Parshat Shemot, Rabbi Tali Adler
Women's wombs lie at the heart of the Exodus. The story of the Jewish people in Egypt begins with sheer numbers, but the Israelites were fertile and prolific; they multiplied and increased very greatly, so that the land was filled with them. Wombs become, in this telling of the story, the key to both the enslavement and the salvation of the Jewish people. It is the miraculous reproductive capacity of these organs that allow the Jewish people to survive despite the Egyptians' best attempts to quell their growth...
