Kosher Food Rules
Have you ever brought a meal or snack into BHT for yourself or your family? Perhaps a meal for your child to eat before Hebrew school starts; a sandwich to eat during a meeting; or your own “special diet” food while we are having a congregational dinner? We encourage you to do so, but, whatever your personal practice is, please note that Beth Hillel does have limits on what can be brought into our building, whether it will be served as part of a congregational meal or just for yourself.
Please note that the following may not be brought into the building:
Any pork product, including: bacon, sausage, pepperoni, lard in pie crust, bacon bits in salads or dressings, eggrolls (which always have pork unless you specifically request vegetarian) etc.
Any shellfish, including: shrimp, crabmeat, oyster sauce or lobster sauce in Chinese food, etc.
(Imitation crab [which is fish] and “bacos,” which are not made from pork, are fine.)
During Passover, no hametz of any kind may be brought into the building, including: bread, bagels, cookies, candy bars, donuts, crackers, croutons, popcorn, tortilla chips, pretzels, etc.
There is NO restriction on mixing meat and dairy at Beth Hillel. So, cheese and turkey sandwiches or cheeseburgers are allowed.
Please be careful to check ingredients and ask what is in soups, salads, sandwiches, etc. before bringing them to the temple.
Your cooperation in helping us observe this level of institutional kashrut is appreciated.
